Lakeville North defenseman Maggie Flaherty verbally committed to Minnesota Duluth on Monday, making the announcement on Twitter.
Flaherty tallied 16 goals and 22 assists this past year as a sophomore for North, whose season was ended by Lakeville South in the section playoffs. Flaherty, the team’s leading scorer, accounted for two of her team’s three goals in the 7-3 loss.
As a freshman for North in 2014-15, Flaherty totaled 14 goals and 12 assists to finish second on her team in scoring. She also played on the varsity as an eighth grader — tallying four goals and 14 assists — in 2013-14 when North finished third in the state in Class AA.
Flaherty’s older sister, Taylor, just finished her freshman season at WCHA-rival North Dakota, appearing in 24 of 35 games. They played two seasons together at North with Maggie outscoring Taylor both seasons. The sisters played together as a defensive pairing in 13-14 before getting split up in 14-15.
In a Minneapolis Star Tribune story from Jan. 3, 2015, Maggie is quoted saying Taylor is the stronger of the two while Taylor is quoted in the story saying, “Maggie is the better player. And I’m really proud to be able to say that.”
When Maggie arrives at UMD in the fall of 2018, Taylor will be a senior for the Fighting Hawks.
