Fall early signing period underway (And my philosophy on chasing recruiting news)

Editor’s note: Please read the disclaimer at the end of this post on how I report about recruiting

Today begins the fall early signing period for college hockey, as well as other sports such as basketball. Student athletes who plan to enroll in a university for 2015-16 can sign their National Letter of Intent between now and Nov. 19, 2014, or wait until the regular NLI signing period from April 15-Aug. 1, 2015. Click here to learn more about NLIs.

Any future Bulldogs who sign today probably won’t be huge surprises. If you’re curious to see who has already verbally committed to UMD, I advise you check out Chris Heisenberg’s spreadsheet, or visit the Bulldogs page on Elite Prospects and scroll down to transactions. Elite Prospects is also a great way to check in on former UMD players. It’s a cool site.

If I see or hear of any signings today or this week, I’ll pass them along on Twitter and then do a roundup sometime on this blog. Maybe we’ll get a roundup from coach Scott Sandelin and Shannon Miller today during their press conferences. Maybe it will have to wait until next week.

Know this though: As a reporter, I don’t spend a lot of my time and energy on recruiting. If I luck into news, I’ll pass it along, but my philosophy when it comes to covering college sports – especially the volatile recruiting world of college hockey – is to focus on the student-athletes who are already on campus. There will be plenty of time to write about these incoming players when they arrive on campus. Let’s live in the now instead of the future.
